Your tyres are the only contact between your motorcycle and the road, which is why choosing the right one matters. When it's time to replace your tyres or check whether the current set is correct in {{dealer.city}}, understanding the markings on the sidewall is essential. This guide breaks down how to read those markings, decode load and speed ratings, and pick the right tyre with confidence.

Why Tyre Markings Matter

Every tyre has a series of codes on its sidewall that reveal its size, construction, load capacity, top speed, manufacturing date, and aspect ratio. Choosing the wrong tyre directly affects how your bike performs on {{dealer.city}} roads. A tyre that's too wide on a commuter can reduce acceleration and fuel efficiency, while one with a lower speed rating than required risks a blowout at high speeds.

The Standard Tyre Marking Format

A typical motorcycle tyre marking looks like this: 180/55 ZR 17 M/C (73W)

Each part of the sequence conveys specific information. Here's what it means.

Tyre Width

The first number is the width of the tyre in millimetres, measured sidewall to sidewall when correctly inflated. In 180/55, 180 means 180 mm.

A wider tyre offers more grip but adds weight and rolling resistance. Always stick to the width specified by your motorcycle's manufacturer or recommended by {{dealer.outlet_name}} in {{dealer.city}}.

Aspect Ratio

The number after the slash is the aspect ratio — the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tyre's width. In 180/55, 55 means the sidewall height is 55% of the 180 mm width.

Lower ratio – sportier, sharper handling
Higher ratio – more comfort and durability

Tyre Construction

The letter after the aspect ratio indicates how the tyre is built:

Code	Type	Speed Capability	Typical Use
D	Diagonal	Moderate	Off-road vehicles
B	Bias-belted	Medium-high	Commuter bikes, cruisers
R	Radial	High	Highway and high-speed use
ZR	High-speed radial	Very high (>240 km/h)	Sports motorcycles
Dash(-)	Breaker	Up to ~150 mph	Heavier cruisers, vintage vehicles

Wheel Diameter

The number after the construction type is the wheel diameter in inches. In 180/55 ZR 17, 17 means it fits a 17-inch wheel. This must match your wheel size exactly.

The M/C Designation

M/C simply stands for Motorcycle and confirms the tyre is designed specifically for motorcycle use.

Load Index

The number after the wheel size is the load index — a code representing the maximum weight in kilograms the tyre can carry.

Load Index	Max Load (kg)	Typical Use
30	106	Small scooters
40	140	Mid-size scooters
47	175	Maxi-scooters
58	236	Entry-level motorcycles
62	265	Mid-size commuter bikes
67	307	Sport bikes
73	365	Heavy touring motorcycles
80	450	Large cruisers

This includes the total weight of the motorcycle, rider, pillion, and luggage while riding across {{dealer.city}}.

Speed Rating

The last letter indicates the maximum speed the tyre can safely handle.

Code	Max Speed (km/h)	Typical Use
J	100	Mopeds, scooters
L	120	Small motorcycles
P	150	Commuter bikes
S	180	Standard motorcycles
H	210	Sport bikes
V	240	High-performance motorcycles
W	270	Superbikes
Y	300	Racing motorcycles

The speed rating must match or exceed your bike's top speed capability.

Older Inch-Based Markings

Many commuter motorcycles in India, including those used in {{dealer.city}}, still use the inch-based format, such as 3.00 – 18 58P:

3.00 → Width in inches (~76.2 mm)
Dash (-) → Bias-ply construction
18 → Rim size in inches
58 → Load index
P → Speed rating (~150 km/h)

In this system, the aspect ratio is assumed to be 100% by default.

Date of Manufacture

Every tyre has a date code, usually enclosed in an oval on the sidewall. The last four digits are what matter — the first two indicate the week, the last two indicate the year.

Example: 4513 = Week 45 of 2013

Tyres age even when unused, so always check this before buying from {{Dealer Name}} or other sellers in {{dealer.city}}.

Other Markings You Should Know

Marking	Meaning
TL	Tubeless
TT	Tube-type
TWI	Tread Wear Indicator
Direction Arrow	Correct rotation direction
NHS	Not for Highway Service (track use only)
Air Pressure	Maximum recommended inflation
Made in [Country]	Country of origin

How to Apply This When Choosing a Tyre

The simplest rule is to follow your motorcycle's factory specifications. You can find them in the owner's manual, the swing arm sticker, or the existing tyre's sidewall. If you plan to change the size or type in {{dealer.city}}, consult an authorised service centre like {{dealer.outlet_name}} — even small changes can impact handling, safety, and warranty.

Final Thoughts

Tyre markings may look like a confusing string of numbers and letters, but once you understand them, they become a useful tool. Next time you check your bike in {{dealer.city}}, take a moment to read the sidewall — you'll make smarter decisions when it's time for a replacement.
